چکیده

We present long-slit spectroscopy, B and R bandpass imaging, and 21 cm observations of a sample of early-type galaxies in nearby clusters which are known to be either in a star-forming phase or to have had star formation which recently terminated. From the long-slit spectra, obtained with the Blanco 4-m telescope, we find that emission lines in the star-forming cluster galaxies are significantly more centrally concentrated than in a sample of field galaxies. The broadband imaging reveals that two currently star-forming early-type galaxies in the Pegasus I cluster have blue nuclei, again indicating that recent star formation has been concentrated. In contrast, the two galaxies for which star formation has already ended show no central color gradient. The Pegasus I galaxy with the most evident signs of ongoing star formation (NGC7648), exhibits signatures of a tidal encounter. Neutral hydrogen observations of that galaxy with the Arecibo radiotelescope reveal the presence of ∼4 x 108M⊙ of HI. Arecibo observations of other current or recent star-forming early-type galaxies in Pegasus I indicate smaller amounts of gas in one of them, and only upper limits in others. Massive and Globular Clusters – Part of the same family ?

Populations of young star clusters show significant differences even among “normal” disk galaxies. In this contribution I discuss how properties of young cluster systems are related to those of their host galaxies, based on a recent study of clusters in a sample of 22 nearby spiral galaxies. Luminous young clusters similar to the “super” star clusters observed in starbursts and mergers exist in...

The Environmental Dependence of Star Formation in the Nearby Universe

We have investigated how the incidence of star-forming galaxies varies with the environment using a volume-limited sample of nearby galaxy spectra extracted from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey. The environment is characterized by the local number density of galaxies, corrected for sample incompleteness and border effects. Using the equivalent widths of [O II]λ3727 and Hδ we discriminate the sta...

The Butcher-Oemler Effect at Low Redshift: Spectroscopy of Five Nearby Clusters of Galaxies

We present multi-fiber spectroscopy and broadband imaging of early-type galaxies in five nearby rich clusters of galaxies. The main purpose was to look for “abnormal” spectrum galaxies (i.e., post-starburst galaxies which have strong Balmer absorption lines and emission line galaxies) in nearby clusters that are similar to those found by Caldwell et al. (1993) in the Coma cluster. Three of the ...

Star Formation Modes in Low - Mass Disk Galaxies

Low-mass disk galaxies with well-organized structures are relatively common in low density regions of the nearby Universe. They display a wide range in levels of star formation activity, extending from sluggishly evolving 'superthin' disk systems to nearby starbursts. Investigations of this class of galaxy therefore provides opportunities to test and define models of galactic star formation pro...

Merger-induced Starbursts

Extragalactic starbursts induced by gravitational interactions can now be studied from z ≈ 0 to ∼ >2. The evidence that mergers of gas-rich galaxies tend to trigger galaxy-wide starbursts is strong, both statistically and in individual cases of major disk–disk mergers. Star formation rates appear enhanced by factors of a few to ∼10 above normal. Detailed studies of nearby mergers and ULIRGs sug...
